“The gallery became the heart of Greenwood where we effortlessly built a new, diverse community through art exhibits, music, and friendships,” Dr. Ricco Wright, owner and curator, continued. “That spirit lives on as we renew our commitment to strengthen the community in our new location where we’ll have more opportunities for meaningful discussions, workshops, entertainment, and making history. We remember our past, honor our legacies, and celebrate our future together, through conciliation and healing which leads to unity and love — the latter two being the final parts of the four-part sequence.”
"The featured artist this month is Theresa Cates and the title of her show is 'Still Swingin’ Low.' Theresa Cates of Little Rock, AR, started painted at an early age with no formal training. She developed her style all on her own. She would sit on the floor to paint with her canvas pulled close to her. While creating each piece, she found herself looking at each from all directions. It was then that she realized that she must fill the whole of the canvas to convey what's inside of her. Since then, she’s made certain to cover every inch of the canvas. After finishing each piece, she revels in knowing that she has established a relationship with it and that she has completed what she set out to do. Her aim has never been for her paintings to be beautiful. Rather, she aims to set an atmosphere of the time and location of the composition. Faith, joy, color and soul are at the core of her paintings, because these things are what she believes to be the medicines of life. But given this, she ends up creating very beautiful, colorful paintings, rich in black history and black culture."
